Visit to Highway Dept.

Present: Bill Sayre, Kit Smith, Bob Buchele,  Bill Turner, Sam Kellogg

1.  The Highway Dept. is submitting two requests this year: (1) sweeper, (2) building renovation and addition.

Bill said the old sweeper is dead.  A new sweeper will cost around $125,000 and last around 15 years.  He is subcontracting the sweeping this spring and estimates it will cost around $14,000.  (Note: We should find out what the bill turns out to be.  It will be useful in deciding on our recommendation on this request.)

Bill has a four year old estimate on the building work: $170,000.  It will be higher now.  He wants to add two bays for his equipment, a garage for two police cruisers, additional office space and a metal roof over the whole building.  It would include a new ventilation system, smoke/fire detectors and perhaps a sprinkler system.

If it is approved, Bill and his crew would do a lot of the work themselves (site prep, block work,** etc.)


2.  Bill Sayre asked Bill about the switch from the loader that Town Meeting approved to the loader/backhoe** he actually purchased.  Bill said he discussed this with the Select Board, Finance Committee and the Capital Planning Committee and was advised by the Select Board to make the switch to what he felt he actually needed due to the delay involved in returning to the town for another vote.


3.  Other items:

    Truck 6 due for replacement in 2009 (~ $125,000).

    The Ford 550 in 2010

Bill covers part of his equipment cost with funds from the Water and Sewer enterprise fund.  E.g., the last truck he bought cost $150,000 but $40,000 came from Water and Sewer.

Truck 2.  1985 – mileage 14K.  Was a Fire Dept. engine, now pulls a sander.



Bill observed that we need to budget expenditures in advance in anticipation of equipment failure, so that he can replace equipment in a timely fashion when they finally do fail.  

Bill showed us Dump truck 7, military surplus with 15K miles on it, bought for $1,500, worth $10-15K.  Uses it to haul sand to job sites.
